LEMON GELATO ~ is for Citrus Lovers

It’s September. should I write a post on Gelato??? Absolutely!
Love Gelato and make it year round. It's not reserved just for the summer months.
Since I love citrus, I embrace it in my desserts whenever possible.

The Lemon Gelato recipe follows in this post after I share with you photos of the
Princeton Farmer’s Market located in Princeton, New Jersey.
This past summer I’ve visited several farmers’ markets and posted photos on my blog.
I must say, I had a blast. I met so many nice people and enjoyed seeing
all the different produce, products etc. that vendors offered for sale.

To date, I’ve visited the following farmers’markets and posted photos on my blog:
Montgomery (includes Fresh Cherry Cobbler Recipe)
Metuchen (includes Buttermilk Biscuits Recipe)
West Windsor (includes Italian Cream Cake Recipe)

A VISIT TO PRINCETON FARMERS’ MARKET

On Thursday, September 1st, I stopped by the Princeton Farmers’ Market.

Hurricane Irene passed through the east coast a few days earlier, August 27 and 28 (Saturday and Sunday). There was some damage in my area, but not as severe as other locations. I didn’t anticipate the market being open. Fortunately, it was business as usual in Princeton. The Princeton Farmers’ Market is located in a plaza setting. There’s a great vibe here. There is also live music. Had a great time meeting the vendors and taking photos of their products.
Support your local farmers’ markets.
it’s good for you and the economy.
The Princeton Farmers Market offers the community a wonderful variety of vegetables, fruits, grassfed poultry and meats, eggs, cheeses, honey, fresh juices, breads, flowers, and vegan/gluten free snacks. All the  farmers are local and only sell what they grow themselves. All breads, baked goods, and other products are freshly made using healthy ingredients and include connections with local farmers. No commercial mixes are allowed to be used. Supporting your local farmers and thereby knowing where your food comes from assures the safety and sustainability of what you buy. Come and enjoy the market--sitting at the tables under an umbrella, listening to the music at noontime, feeling a part of the community, and taking home all the rich tasting fresh edibles.”

Now, let’s head to the kitchen and make some Lemon Gelato!

LEMON GELATO
Adapted by Carmen Ortiz of Baking is my Zen

YIELD: 6-8 portions
PREP TIME: approximately 15-20 minutes
DELONGHI GELATO MACHINE CHURN TIME: approximately 40 minutes

INGREDIENTS:
½ cup lemon juice
2 lemons (grated peel)
½ cup water
1 cup sugar
½ cup milk
¼ cup heavy cream

DIRECTIONS:

ZEST LEMONS:
Using a zester, zest two lemons.

Do not zest too deep into the lemon.
The pith (white part of lemon) is bitter.

FILTER LEMON JUICE:
Note: To get maximum juice from lemons, place it in the microwave for a few seconds.
Roll lemons on the counter in a back and forth motion while pressing down.
Cut lemons in half.
Squeeze out the juice, pulp and seeds into a cup.

Pour juice through a sieve to filter out pulp and seeds.

COMBINE GELATO INGREDIENTS:
Place the water, sugar, filtered lemon juice and grated rind together
in a bowl and mix until the sugar is dissolved.
Add the cream and milk. Mix together.

MAKING GELATO USING GELATO MACHINE:
Place the blade into the gelato bowl.
Pour lemon mixture into the gelato bowl.
Cover with lid.
Turn gelato machine on.
The lemon gelato will be ready in about 40 minutes.

Gelato is ready to serve.
Gelato melts quickly. Serve immediately or store in freezer.
Get yourself a spoon and enjoy your
fresh Lemon Gelato!
