You can catch these two authors, Matt Lewis and Renato Poliafito on a
THROWDOWN show with Bobby Flay,
today, 8/18, at 9 p.m. on Food Network.

Tired of the rat race, friends and co-workers Matt Lewis and Renato Poliafito left the grind of jobs in advertising to follow their tasty dream of opening a bakery. This led to the creation of their Elvis-inspired banana cream pie that has fans flocking from all over to their Brooklyn bakery to get a taste of this dessert that is fit for a king! Can Matt and Renato cream the competition with their heavenly dessert, or will Bobby's take on the classic pie reign supreme? The judges will likely scratch their heads until they declare a winner at this Banana Cream Pie Throwdown!

Now…onto bigger things in my life. I’ll be starting a pastry course at the French Culinary Institute in New York City in September.

Look forward to meeting Jacques Torres, Dean of Pastry Arts and meeting other like-minded folks. I’m so thrilled and excited to learn baking from the pros. Wish me luck! I hope to post about my FCI experiences and share new recipes and techniques with you.

Till then…

Peace in baking,

Carmen

  1. Best of luck at the institite. I really did enjoy the series, and it was good to luck at the pictures again after screwing up the lemon-lime bars last night.

Out of curiosity...what is your favorite thing that you've made from their cookbook?

  2. Aaron, I've only tested the 7 recipes thus far. There is the typical 'chocolate fav', Brownies and Sweet and Salty Cake.

I must say, though, I didn't think I'd like the Tricolor cookies. They ended up being the receipe that I can't wait to make again. It's a little different...and beautiful as well.

Thanks for being a part of the giveaway.

  3. I agree about the tri-color. I skimmed that recipe in the book and decided I didn't want to do it...then I saw your pictures and can't wait to make it.

    Thanks again for the series.

  8. Glad your giveaway was a success. Love the T-shirts by the way, very nice!

To answer your question, the eggplant in my dish was deep fried, so I let the salt extract as much moisture as possible to be left with a crispy finished product. No I do not wash off the salt, it leaves the eggplant pefectly seasoned.
